from Mark Glasscock
I’ve been lucky enough to fish all of the great lakes in the US and Mexico, and I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to fish Lake Baccarac. Before coming, I had read all of the reports and don’t know that I really believed them 100%. I did see the photos on the website – very impressive – but I still had a hard time believing. But upon my arrival, seeing the photos on the walls of the tackle store, I absolutely dropped my jaw. Now I understand that it’s just not FEW 9 to 18 lbs bass, it’s thousands, with many different faces associated with those bass. I had still not caught on the bass on the lake, but instantly felt like I became part of this elite club.
It wasn’t until late afternoon the first day that I realized that this lake was a bass fisherman’s paradise, a structure fisherman’s dream. I was told there was a great top water bite, senkos, flukes, spinner baits, this and that, but my guide insisted that if I was happy to fish deep and to fish structure, I would be well rewarded trying to lure these bass with jigs and heavy-weighted plastics. We founds spots on the lake that must have been holding thousands of monster bass. As I was looking at the depth finder, I couldn’t believe my eyes.
Did I catch a trophy? Oh, yes. Did I catch five fish over the magical ten lb. mark? Yes. Is it the best trip I have ever been on for big bass? Without a doubt. But I’m more excited to understand what’s coming in the future for this lake, if taken care of. These are the hardest fighting, healthiest bass I have ever seen. The structure alone is enough to make you come back. The guide I had absolutely had radar on when a bass was about to hit my lure.
It’s not an easy lake to fish. With a good guide, it increases your odds but you still have to be on top of your game at Lake Baccarac. Oh by the way, the lodge was great; the food beyond excellent. Manuel was the ultimate host and guide. I don’t see myself going to another lake to fish for bass. I’ll be back as soon as I can, hopefully to bring many, many more friends.

Sorry for the delay in reporting. Our website had been hacked. Fishing is challenging but very rewarding with fish up to 11 lbs. being caught on Super Flukes and 4 inch flukes, watermelon candy colors along with watermelon red and the bite was significantly better using Gamakatsu weighted hooks, chartreuse spinner baits, along with 4 and 5 inch black and blue senkos.
Gary West and Allan Hames, fishing with Eddie, had low numbers but did produce some trophy bass on the day before the full moon.
10/17/2012
Richard Burris at the lodge had great success top water fishing. We have had a couple of days of rainy, cloudy weather, and they have reported bass over 10 lbs. using top water only. As a matter of fact, the only bait they have thrown for the last two days has been top water. Other boats have been alternating between top water and medium crank baits, with a good number of 2 to 4 lb. fish caught on crank baits.
10/16/2012
Dick Burris group arrrived private plane yesterday and had excellent topwater action….good rain all day long as well…..bring your yellow Magic( topwater )
10/15/2012
With one over 14 caught last week on topwater we are pretty happy. The bite is very slow but rewarding with bigger fish biting right now..mostly senkos and big flukes with some topwater
10/12/2012
Wes Bullion’s group reported a great trip. Not very many bites but only big fish, with the largest being 12.14 caught by his father. Fishing around the stick ups, using Senkos and flukes had the most action.
David Bolton group, arriving private plane, has come to the lodge for the second time recently and thought the fish were harder to catch this trip than last but did manage to record three fish over 10 lbs. and eight fish over 8 lbs. Some boats caught between 10 and 15 fish a day and some caught 25 to 35 fish a day. The water is extremely clear and we have probably gotten all of the rain we are going to get for this season. The lake is standing at 70 percent.
10/06/2012
the bite is improving with Wes Bullion group catching
a 10.8, 8.10 and 7.8 late yesterday afternoon on Black/blue senkos…fish are still suspending and the small crankbaits are producing a small fish bite
David Bolton group arriving on Monday with big group…
10/03/2012
fish are suspended, pretty slow bite the last 3 days
10/1/2012
Last week prior to the hurricane, the catching had been relatively dormant. Starting about two days prior to the hurricane passing, just as we would expect with these conditions, the fish were very active, with countless 4 and 5 lbers and the Jeff Kendle group caught fish over 11 lbs. Fishing remained very strong as the hurricane passed and has slowed considerably since the skies have turned clear again. The best bait is, without a doubt, Senkos, Sluggos and flukes.
have 4 seats on a King Air out of Amarillo around Oct 15…trying to match up with Dave McKinney group

Okay, all you Baccarac fishermen – the lake level stands at 65%. The rains have pretty much stopped. We are in much better shape than we were last year. Last year at this time, we were at 40% capacity. We have not had any fishermen on the lake in a couple of weeks, although Manuel has been on the water and said that fish were somewhat hard to find but will react to crank baits along with rattle traps. Our temperature has been very hot since the rains have stopped. We will be on the water every day next week so we look forward to having some consistent reports soon.
09/09/2012
Fishing seems to be pretty challenging over the last week. The fish are very scattered and holding in 14 to 18 feet of water. Big crank baits are working but medium ones are working much better. We are having good success using Storm Wild Eyed 5 inch in mullet and tilapia color. We continue to have rain. The lake is near 60 percent. This time last year at its most full level, it was only 40 percent. My guess is, that by October 1st, the lake will be over 70 percent full. We will not have any more reports until the first week in October.

We arrived last Thursday, the 23rd of August, at the lodge. The 23rd produced unbelievable topwater action, with no rains but heavy, heavy cloud cover and enough humidity to choke you. We caught somewhere in the neighborhood of nine to twelve fish over 10lbs. on topwater. Huge rains arrived that afternoon. On Saturday and Sunday, the 25th and 26th, the lake rose over ten feet although they caught a few fish, they were most small ones and the fish has scattered. By Monday, they located fish in Papachaw and caught most of our fish in deep water with 8 inch plum and purple worms. The lake is in great shape, currently standing about 60% capacity with plenty of rains coming.
looking for 4 people out of amarillo any time the first 2 week of October –private flight flying direct
08/21/2012
Eddie Bezler reports: We had a great morning bite followed by a very slow afternoon bite all three days. Ten to eleven foot diving bomber crankbaits would produce fish whereas the deep diving crankbaits were too big for their liking on this trip. Topwater was always good early morning but not like I’ve had in trips past. We fished a lot with the Zipper worms and had moderate success. The rains in the afternoon were much needed for the fishermen but the fish did not seem to care much for biting after the rains. All four in our group did catch a fish over 10 lbs. and we all caught four or five fish over 9 lbs. There were plenty of 6 to 7 lbers caught. I would guess we all caught fifty fish apiece in that range. This is the second time we have flown our plane into Mexico – still nothing there to give any heartburn and will do it again.
08/09/2012
Big fish…big fish ….big fish,,,,,, Albert Torres catching plenty of big ones…6 over 9 and 2 over 10 TODAY!
08/05/2012
As of today’s date, the lake is now higher than at any point during the entire last season. Having the afternoon rains up in the mountains, the lake is filling up nicely. The last couple of groups are still finding a few big fish, big fish being over 10 lbs., an incredible number of nines, but the fish are skinny. A month ago, these would have been 10 lb. fish. We still have plenty of rainy weather coming our way and the chance for a couple of big hurricanes. Manuel has the lodge ready to accommodate the group that arrives today, and for anybody else who would like to get down there, we look forward to having you.
Big rains and the lake is already higher than the highest it was all last season…..group at the Lodge now….check back for the report

Here is the revised report.
Post trip report from Bill Doll.
Fishing was un-believably good with p.m. rain about every day.
South end of the lake and other bays are clear or slightly stained, but still good water.
Deep diving crankbaits and spinnerbaits were the producing lures.
Seventeen over 10, twenty four over 11, twelve over
12, three over 13 for (56) total.
07/05/2012
More phenomenal fishing! Bill Doll, catching a total of three over 13, two over 12 and twenty-two over 10, the lake is getting quite muddy on the north end up the river; the south end is still very clear and producing the giant fish.
the water is onthe rise
we have several planes looking for two addtional people and ready to depart in the next couple of days….
07/02/2012
The last four days at the lodge have been phenomenal! With the water rising almost three feet and with the full moon, the bit was slow in the morning but very good in the afternoon with Enrique Salmon and Pablo Garcia reporting a bunch of 8’s and 9’s, six or seven over 10 and with Pablo landing a 12.2. Enrique said they just fished a few spots on the lake and they found the water getting dirty way up the river from the recent rains.
Gale Vaught and Roger Matthews returned after being there just two weeks ago and you can read about his June trip in the June section. Gale Vaught managed to catch a 12.6, and 11.12 and an 11.10, eight fish over 10 lbs. total. He did report the numbers were slower than two weeks ago and reported that he had luck all over the lake on this trip. Roger, on his first cast this trip, caught a 9.9, the second fish was a 10.9 and the third was a 9.4. He quoted, “ just awesome!”
The lake is still very fishable and we invite anybody who wants to have an excellent opportunity to catch the trophies of a lifetime to come down right now!
