a great post from Andy Fabbo who just returned
Dwight Hottle and I just returned from Mexico and a week of bass fishing that will be very hard to forget. With the Lake Baccarac Lodge as our hosts, we were treated to some great food, comfy accommodations, breath taking scenery and of course unmatched Big Bass fishing.
After reviewing previous Lake Baccarac fishing reports and seeing the many photos of truly trophy bass, I was hoping for a trip that included memories and catches of a life time. My personal expectations for the trip could best be described as sky high and wildly optimistic. I’m happy to report that this placed delivered.
The travel to this first class lodge is an adventure in itself. Surrounded by picturesque and majestic mountains we were provided with and had as our fishing back drop, post card type views that just added even more to the experience.
To call Lake Baccarac a world class fishery might be an understatement. The geographic local, lake management and minimal fishing pressure combine for a bass fishing experience that’s hard to duplicate. But bass are bass regardless of their size or numbers and during our week of fishing we found that the bass were in a transitional stage. With some fish holding deep and some fish moving shallow, we were challenged to establish any one pattern that would hold for more than a day or two.
We took bass on top water, jerk baits, plastics and spinner baits to name a few and in every level of the water column. One bait that I had not fished before this week but proved to be very effective, especially on big fish, was The Scrounger. 3/8, ½ and ¾ ounce size with a mag fluke or 7 inch sluggo trailer caught most of our bass between
5 – 9 lbs and is very versatile. I’d encourage you to give it a try in your home waters.
Although there were several amazing catches made, this was not a week of suicidal bass fishing were everything and anything produced fish. Each morning and afternoon’s fishing demanded the best efforts of both our guides and us. And speaking of guides, the two we had were the best and we were lucky to have them. Lake Baccarac is a vast fishery, and in an age where gps and high tech navigational/positioning is all the rage to assist the angler in the quest to locate bass, you will find none of that here. Using just the simplest of sonars and their intimate knowledge and experience of the lake, Manuel and “Geno” took us to spot after big bass spot. It was impressive to say the least.
And so what did we catch? Well, there were no 100 or 200 fish days. In fact, I don’t think we even had a 100 fish day between the three of us. Like I mentioned the fishing was a bit off. But we did have several of the big bites and bags that this body of water is so famous for. Additionally, it doesn’t take long to get a very tainted view of what a “picture” fish is. Here, a 5 & 6 pound bass although nice in quite common place, this size fish gets a quick eyeball and is then released rather unceremoniously; 7’s & 8’s get honorable mention, a photo and usually get weighted; 8’s & 9’s are said to be the best fighters and you won’t get any argument for us. 10’s and higher are called “Grande” by the guides and are what everyone is looking for. We saw 3 this trip and 1 came from 18 inches of water right on the bank. This makes you really focus and hope you stick every single fish that hits as any single cast – could be the one.
So you can see how an angler can quickly adopt a very tainted and distorted view of what an “average” bass is. I may never be the same.
So here are the numbers:
Best five fish bags,
Jeff ~ 42 lbs 7 ounces
Dwight ~ 45 lbs 2 ounces
A-Jay ~ 45 lbs 10 ounces
Best single day 5 fish bag of the trip: Dwight got on a deep bite – 43 lbs
This incredible bag included three fish over 9 lbs , one over 8lb and a 7 lb “dink”
As for PB’s- as this was Jeff’s second trip to the Lake, his PB was already a lofty 10 lbs and 14 ounces. His best fish this trip came in at 10 lbs 4 ounces, certainly nothing to sneeze at and a real trophy. This is the first time I’ve fished with Jeff; The man is a good stick and I fully expect him to shatter that mark on our very next trip.
Dwight’s previous PB was a 9 lb 2 once Florida Trophy. “Mr Smallie” fished long and hard this week and during that awesome day in which Dwight weighed a 43 lb bag – he did thumb his new PB at 9 lbs 8 ounces – and that Hawg Tech handle was tested.
My previous PB was a Michigan Bass that went 7lbs 1 ounce. Well that didn’t last long on this particular trip. The very first morning I bested that twice with 7 lb 4 ounce and 7 lb 6 once bass.(My guides were not impressed though I was rather excited) I surpassed it again the next afternoon with a 9 lb 8 ounce Beast that was the single hardest fighting bass I could have ever imagined – just unreal. Now I was a very happy man at this point, but Lake Baccarac’s bounty blessed me one final time with a 10 lb 11 once Bug-eyed Monster that absolutely crushed a 1 ounce spinner bait in 22 feet of water. I’m still smiling over that bass and it might be a while before it subsides.
As you can imagine, Dwight and I weren’t at the lodge long before we started talking about and making plans to return to Lake Baccarac and can you blame us? Accordingly, Jeff did give us the “I told you look” and plans to be right there as well. As I have mentioned, the fishing was a little off. After talking to the lodge owner Terry Holland and the guides, and as hard as it might be to comprehend, Lake Baccarac has more to offer. I’d really like to be there for that !

There are certainly some highlights over the last seven days, and I can tell you about a couple of 8’s, a couple of 9’s and several 10’s. But the truth of the matter is, that since the first of the month, two huge cold fronts have blown through, bringing extremely high winds that are very unusual for this time of year which has made the fishing very challenging. Even in the words of Manuel, “ No fishes want to bite.” As the lake water temperature stabilizes, which could happen any day, the fishing will turn around. No reports over the next seven days, but you can call Terry direct – 806-679-4433 – to get a real time report.

Steve Newell yesterday caught 28 fish with his 3 largest weighing 37 lbs 4 oz ,,, his fishing partner struggled with 13 fish for the day
03/06/2013
Fishing remains sporadic so when it’s good, it’s good, but when it’s slow, it’s very slow.
Mike Wilson’s group of eight people flying in private air had a fantastic trip, especially Larry Pinkston, who had a 48 lb. 7 oz stringer caught one day, his five biggest fish. Good job, Larry!
Gary West’s group of eight also flying in private air, had a couple of slow sessions due to a cold front and wind, but as a group, landed three fish over 10, several fish that were 9.14 or 9.15 that had already spawned out.
Steve W fished hard yesterday and caught 26 bass, seven being 9 lbs. or better.

BIG BASS! BIG BASS! BIG BASS!
Chester Graham and his group had a great combination of big fish and good numbers, with a 10.1, 10.0, three fish between 9 and 10 lbs. on the last day. There were six fish over 8 and seven fish over 7.
And then the Big Bass crew – Baird and Andy Archbald – caught three over 11, sixteen over 10, 22 fish over 9 and 34 over 8 lbs. Tim Wallen caught 37 fish over 7 lbs. Flukes and watermelon seed and watermelon red fished weightless in 10 to 16 feet of water caught the bigger bass. White and chartreuse spinner baits, slow rolling on the bottom, along with shallow running crank baits produced the numbers of fish. Fish hard and the fish will bite.
02/24/2013
Chester Graham’s group of ten reported good fishing, with some boats catching 35 fish a day. His group used a lot of spinner baits along with watermelon flukes. Bob Bennett landed a couple of double-digit fish.
Baird Archbald and his group of eight had only an average trip after some of the exceptional trips they have had in the past, but plenty of photos have surfaced depicting multiple digits being caught. The bigger bass are hanging on the points and heavy into the spawn and they are being very finicky. In the back of the coves, there are plenty of smaller bass if you are so inclined to fish for them. Bill Kenyon caught a nice 12.6 out of the Archbald group. Watermelon flukes are the best bait.
02/17/2013
rattle traps working up the river for the better numbers along 6 fish over 10 yesterday and today along 14 over 9…some boats catching up to 50 fish a day and some boats just a few fish a day…Bill Hicks caught a nice 11.2 on topwater
fishing during the spawn is pretty tough!!!!
02/14/2013
the lodge full and we are having some very slow results for both numbers and big fish…big fish of the week only a 8.13 …..stay tuned…..
02/10/2013
after two very slow days the big fish along with numbers came back today with guide Alanzo fishing Wes Moffat caught a 11.0. 12.4, 11.5 all on topwater water
Sixto fishing with Jerry BAllard and Bob Schriver caught a 10.6 on topwater
Manuel Salazar fishing with Gil Wright and Denis caught a total of 38 fish with a 9.8, 8.6 and 8.3 on topwater
02/09/2013
An overview of the last few days of fishing: The Trent Loukas/Andrus Brothers trip is over and they flew back to Amarillo in their jet. Although the bite was very challenging, all members of the group ended up catching fish over 10 lbs. and Trent stated that he caught countless fish over 9. A couple of guys in the group broke their personal best, with Chris Scharbauer catching a 10.2. Every day, their big fish pot required at least a 10 lber to be in the money.
The Gil Wright group currently at the lodge is having the same challenging conditions, with Gil currently not catching anything worth noting but Bob Schreiwer fishing with Sixto catching a 10.8, 9.15 and a 9.0 for his three biggest fish so far.
The best producing guide over the last ten days has been El Tigre. He has been dialed to the spots that are holding the best numbers and the best quality of fish, with some of his clients catching 50 and 60 fish in a session.
02/08/2013
every since Gil and his group has arrived the bite is extremely slow..Russ Johnson is picking up topwater fish every morning…Trent Loukas and Judd Hightower have landed several nice trophies the bite has been very slow the last 2 days
Manuel Salazar predicting the better bite starts in March this year which will be exactly when the better bite started last year
02/06/2013
A couple of great things are happening today at the lodge:
Gil Wright and his group from Oklahoma are arriving via their private plane. Gil frequents the lodge more than anybody else we have and never fails to disappoint, has caught countless fish over 10 lbs. ……….But even better than that, Manuel Salazar, my partner and the best fishing guide in Mexico, without a doubt — and I will put money on that — is back on the water today after taking a ten-day break. I can’t wait to see what Manuel finds!
02/05/2013
ust as we predicted, the action is slowly starting to pick up at Lake Baccarac. I definitely feel like this year, March could be the month to be on the lake. Andrus Brother Roofing crew flew their jet to the lodge yesterday. Jud Hightower, on his first cast fishing, caught a 10.9 and Chris Andrus caught a 10.8, with a total of about 20 fish caught on white spinner baits.
Martin Tune, at the lodge four days ago, wrote in that he exclusively threw a spinner bait the whole trip and caught more fish than anybody else at the lodge and reported lots of 7, 8 and 9 lbers and a couple of 10s.
Manuel, scouting out fish, called in yesterday that he believes the big fish will be moved up by the first part of March if not the latter part of March.

action slow!!!! But nice size fish up to 12 pounds….. good action up the river but not much in the shallows
01/30/2013
A recap of the last few days of fishing: With Steve Charbonneau and his group of 16, they reported an overall excellent trip, with fish over 12 lbs. being caught by members of his group. They had the majority of the luck using Alabama rigs and Super Flukes rigged with weighted hooks, Scroungers tipped with watermelon Super Flukes and 7 inch Senkos.
Recently arrived guests reporting better action than the Charbonneau group, with some boats catching 30 to 40 fish a day and fish over 13 lbs. The fish are on the main river points and the best area of the lake is Poppa Chaw. Some anglers, having a hard time fishing deep, are not getting the same results as the more experienced Baccarac anglers.
01/25/2013
slower action but plently of bigger fish…the group had 5 over 10 and 6 over 9
01/24/2013
Action a little slow yesterday for some but the big fish are biting with a total of 22 fish over 9 caught by the group of 14 and 6 over 10 pounds….Alabama rigs!!!!
a little report :
We normally don’t get this excited, but we are starting to get so excited. Jason Courtney sent us his photos of the fish he caught last week on an Alabama rig, one morning catching five fish over 52 lbs. The next day, his five biggest fish were 53 lbs. We are posting those photos on our Facebook page but will also get them posted on our website. The quality of fish we are starting to see, even though the action is pretty sporadic, the fishing is going to shape up for March and April and be nothing short of fantastic. I don’t normally like to make predictions but I’m going to go out on a limb and make that call right now. Come see us!
01/23/2013
Great day at Lake Baccarac Lodge, with Steve Charbonneau and Randy Zotsky arriving via two private jets. Full report later today!
Alabama rigs !!!!!!!!!!!! bring em
01/22/2013
As good as the fishing was Friday and Saturday, Sunday’s fishing was terrible. With the high pressure system and the warm weather moving in, Bill Benson and his boat only managed to squeak one fish for the day. Manuel Salazar, guiding, managed three fish, and Narlin Salazar did not catch a fish all day long. Just to recap, the day before, Jason Courtney caught five fish weighing 52 lbs. on Alabama rigs.
01/21/2013
Fishing for some, excellent; for some, fair. Jason Courtney had a fantastic day yesterday. His five biggest fish weighed 52 lbs. all caught on Alabama rig. Greg Riggle landing fish over 10 lbs. and countless fish 8 to 9 lbs. Other boats at the lodge also landing fish over 10 lbs. on weighted flukes and Scroungers.
The colder water is starting to warm, creating some activity that we didn’t see earlier in the week. I would rate the current conditions as good and improving.
Guide Sixto Figuero landed at 14.14 lber on Jan 15th
01/17/2013
Some of the same continued action as what we were having last week. At the end of last week, Larry Beard landed 30 fish a day, with the majority of them being between 8 and 9 lbs., according to Larry, with two 11’s and one 12 being caught. Larry fishing partner, Mike Hodge, had significantly better action than Larry but was using smaller line, along with smaller baits.
Arriving via private plane, Jason Courtney and his group, along with Greg Riggle and his group, all reported little action yesterday, January 16, but did report nothing but big fish, with Jason not catching any smaller than 8 lbs. and the biggest fish being 11 lbs. The weather was cold on the 15th and 16th, with enough ice forming on our planes that we could not have an early departure the morning of the 16th. The forecast looks to be warming and current water temperature is in the mid sixties but will warm rapidly.
Come fish with Gil Wright on Feb 6th ….departing out of Ft Worth flying directly to the Lake..We have 2 seats open to fill call 806 679 4433 ……this trip is now full!!!!!!!!!!!
01/10/2013
The John Stafford group along with Larry Beard reporting a great afternoon bite with good fish up to 12 pounds being caught on weighted watermelon flukes …The morning bite is extremely slow and you need to work hard in the afternoon but warming temps in the afternoon create the better bite. We are still getting showers at night which could really slow the bite down over the next few days
March 5th 8 spots open on a private flight out of Ft Worth
call 806 679 4433
01/09/2013
We love days like today, anticipating the fishing will shut totally off from the rain, the cold weather and the low pressure system but John Stafford managed to catch and 11.10, with his fishing partner also catching one over 10 lbs. and they caught great numbers of fish using Scrounger jig heads, along with watermelon flukes with weighted hooks.
An additional 10 lb. bass was caught by another member of John Stafford’s party, with only one boat reporting low numbers of fish caught. All others had an exceptional day on the water.
01/07/2013
the cold weather and the cold water coming in the lake has shut the bite down to almost nothing
The John Stafford group arrive in his KIng Air 200 today…
01/06/2013
cold weather and lots of recent rain with the water raising I am predicting a big slow down in the fishing….will report again on the 8th
01/03/2013
Unfortunately, we lost the last week of December’s reports, for those of you keeping track.
To recap, we had a huge cold front with rain move into the area. The water temperatures dropped, along with the air temperatures.
The big fish continued to bite, however, with the exception of a couple of days. We had three over 9 caught with watermelon flukes, caught by Mr. Yokoi from Japan. Mr. Hiroyuki caught a beautiful 11 lb. on a wild-eyed swimming shad in electric blue color. Mr. Kazuakai caught an 11.5 and an 11.0 on a Texas rigged six inch electric blue worm. Scrounger jig heads tipped with flukes produced good numbers of 5 and 6 lb. bass.
The small fish are still not biting, which has been the case all year long.
Mitch Everhart, in his tenth trip to the lake, first time fishing out of our Lake Baccarac Lodge, reports the best fishing experience he has ever had. Rated Manuel Salazar as the best guide he has ever fished with in all of Mexico and caught four fish over 8, one over 9, one over 12 and had nothing but positive things to say about our operation.
The water temps have dropped tremendously and we are looking at a little bit more rain, but thus far, some of the best fishing we have seen for the year.
01/02/2013
Full report later today! Excellent big bite with the current Japanese Group at the Lodge….water temps and air temps very cold but the bite on the big fish remain very strong ….you have got to fish slow right now
