Pleasantly surprised as Narlin Salazar finds the big fishing techniques. It had been somewhat slow but Tag Watson absolutely slayed them using Alabama rigs and spinner baits, reporting the best day of his fishing life. Narlin’s technique of throwing away from the bank back into deeper water was the answer to catching multiple 9 lbsers, plenty of 10 lbers and losing a real trophy that Tag says is the biggest fish he had ever seen.
THE LAST 10 DAYS ON THE WATER

Time Of Day:the last 10 days
In the last ten days, it has been typical Lake Baccarac. Some very good days; some very poor. Last week, the Baird Archbald group had mixed results, but did manage ten fish over 10 lbs. and a 12.6 lb’er, the largest. Texas rigged lizard fishing at Rancho Padre allowed for the better numbers, with some boats catching 80 to 100 fish a day. The bigger fish caught on watermelon colored Magnum flukes. Manuel by far outdid all of the other guides, which is typical, fishing with a 3/8 oz. Scrounger tipped with a white 4 inch fluke. The rattletraps, silver with a black back and silver with a blue back was the best bait for the mid-sized 4 to 7 lb. bass. Today, the Dave McKinney group, who in the past have had incredible luck targeting big bass, struggled today and fishing is very slow. It seems like the last three days are a total 180 degrees from last week, with not very many fish biting. The water has started falling as they are filling up the irrigation canals and the water level is still roughly 80%.

With the lake standing at about 80% capacity and currently stable, with the temperatures in the low nineties, fishing is as we expected – a ton of surface activity as fish are cornering shad and chasing them to the top. Although these fish will not take a topwater lure, the schooling bass can be caught using ¾ and 1 oz. rattletraps. Yesterday, four fish between 8 and 11 were caught on rattletraps in the cove Papachaw. With the stable level, fish have been suspended in 25 feet of water out in the main lake. A lot of these fish are catchable with watermelon lizards and watermelon worms, along with bouncing white double-bladed spinnerbaits on the bottom. Just sticking with the basic worm for the day, currently no problem catching between 20 and 50 per day. Last spring, the spawn was fantastic, with countless 9 to 12 inch bass running the lake near the surface.

The massive hurricane that pummeled Mexico last week caused us to cancel fishing trips. The reality is, we got very little rain at the lake in the right places to have the lake rise much. All in all, we got about five additional feet of water and as of yesterday, the fishing was pretty slow with the new food source rushing into the lake. Those of you hoping to that it would fill the lake up, that’s not the case. The lake is in much better shape level wise than this time last year for those of you that are interested. All cancelled groups are rescheduling right now and arriving in the next couple of weeks.
