On Thursday, Feb. 2, 50 to 150 fish per boat were caught today, with various patterns experimented with. Denis Bootenhoff of Edmond, OK, fishing with Lake Baccarac Lodge guide Gonzalo had the most success at Gonzalo’s request to fish windy points using medium-running, all white Bill Dance crankbaits. Denis’ big fish today was a 10.11, followed by several large single-digit fish. Gary Whitehead of Odessa, TX, and his partner, Morris Shaw, caught 96 fish today, using watermelon seed brush hogs in 12 to 20 feet of water. Gary caught 25 fish between 5 and 6 lbs. Terry Scott of Amarillo, reported this was the best three days of fishing he has ever had in Mexico. Most all of this fish were caught in 10 to 25 feet of water using mostly plastics for the last three days. The water temperature is 70 degrees, with the water level stable.

The fishing has picked up after a couple of slow days. Gary Whitehead, from Odessa, Texas, caught a 10 lb. 14 oz. bass on his first cast after flying in on the private charter. Alonzo, his guide, guaranteed him that fish on his first cast and it happened. Gary’s boat caught 80 fish this afternoon. Most all fish were being caught in shallow water on spinnerbaits. Lance Smith from Oklahoma City, OK, fishing with Denis Bootenhoff, also of Oklahoma, caught a 10.8 and a 9.8 on two consecutive casts on a white Yamamoto senko, rigged wacky style. Gonzalo, their guide, was targeting prime water in 10 to 14 feet. Their best numbers of fish came using a white Bill Dance crankbait. Rene reports that right now with the fish moving up from the deeper water, most all boats are catching between 100 to 150 fish a day. Rene went out early in the morning with Terry Scott and they went all of the way to one of the coves. When Terry Scott made the cast in the cove – BOOM – an explosion – Rene says, “It’s the biggest bass I have ever seen in my life, too big to jump.” He said it struggled and straightened the hooks. Rene is still excited 24 hours later and he is still fighting that fish with Terry Scott. It was caught on a Rico with a red belly and white tail on the back. They stayed in the cove and got one more 8 lb. fish and they kept catching fish with topwater – fifteen more 4 lbers., a 5 lb. fish and probably 45 fish over 2 lbs. Rene says there is a lot of action with worms on the point but the ticket is, the fish are moving from deep to shallow so bring big topwaters – Pop’Rs, Ricos – orange and red belly. Aldo, don’t forget the line – 50 or 60 lb.

Our favorite friend of the lodge, Randall Fox, fishing with Rene, reported 125 fish caught with the largest early this morning on a knucklehead topwater big bass bait that weighed in at 10.8. With the water temperature at 72 degrees and the lake at 80% capacity, the fishing has recovered nicely from the brief cold snap. All anglers are reporting 60 – 100 fish a day, with spinnerbaits catching the best numbers of fish and the large fish being caught in 20 feet of water. Bill Quattreucci, Jr., fishing with guide Claudio, caught a 10.0 lb. using a watermelon brush hog and also caught using a watermelon brush hog was a 10.4 caught by Mike Robert and George “Buddy” Gephardt, fishing with Juan as his guide, using a 10 1/2 inch Zoom worm, caught a 15.0. Just a note, our guide Juan has four fish over 15 to his credit this season.
